Demons of Sickness – Story – Cumirol
Old people’s believes are similar in different nations.
It is believed that supernatural beings live around us on the Earth or around it.
In Serbia, in the Vlasi’s tradition, it is believed that concrete demon is responsible for illness of the people.
His name is Cumirol.
If people confront him together,
and if they have a strong wish to chase him off,
they could succeed.
Demons of the illness could attack you during your sleep.
There are many written stories about it (like torture of the person who dreams in pain… like hand which strangle him…).
Some of these stories are very old, some are newer…
In many houses it is possible to see many rituals for defending people from sickness….
some of them are named „rituals of flame“.
The way how it is done is unbelievable for the present generation used to use computers, TV, movies…
In midnight, women with long hair, fully naked, entered the room in which are their children, formed the clear
circle made of wheat or corn… That’s how the ritual starts….
After they light a match which means that the first part of the ritual is finished.
Then they light a carbon and a rope in it.
They say out special words for three times.
During that time, grass has already burned.
Ash has to be collected and put into the bottle with spring water.
This water is used for splash the house, but after the midnight…
It is clear that we had many incurable diseases during the history.
That’s why we are not surprised that people believed in demons and that they believed in rituals to protect
themselves, especially from the activities of the demon Cumirol.
People from the Vlaska area use to fire three flames in the center of the village, which is called “Slava Tetkama – Glory to Aunts”.
In this ritual participate the whole village, more than once a year if necessary.
The most important part of this ritual are women who speak at once, believing that on that way they run up the demon of sickness from the village.
During the communism era, this ritual was forbidden – and it was performed in secret.
This ritual could still be seen in some villages… women are gather together around the flame, they prepare food in the huge pots… and everybody are trying together to chase off the demons.
The food is served for everybody… and what is left it is designated for the Aunts… but the next morning it has to be dropped into the river.
